We've all been there: standing in the "feminine hygiene" aisle, looking at a sea of menstrual pad options. With wings, without wings, natural, extra-strength, thong shape, extra long, ultra thin. Did we mention a lot of pinks and purples? There are claims of odor-lock technology, pH proactive system, RapidDRY technology and many other fancy claims that, to be fair, can be truly overwhelming. Where do you even start?
If you're confused, it's because it is confusing. But it doesn't have to be. Materials do matter. But it's more about how those materials work together to keep you comfortable, dry, and supported.
At joni, we don’t choose materials based on trends or buzzwords. We choose them with intention, balancing what’s better for the planet with what works best for your body. Let’s break down what really matters for your comfort, your health, and your ability to choose what’s right for you.
1. Cotton vs. wood pulp: what actually happens when you bleed
Organic cotton has become the darling of the “clean” period care world. It sounds pure, plant-based, and wholesome—which is appealing. But when you’re choosing a pad, the real question isn’t what sounds good—it’s: does it perform when I need it most?
Here’s the part that often gets missed.
Cotton is an absorbent material—but it absorbs slowly. Its fibres tend to hold liquid close to the surface rather than actively pulling it down and away. Under pressure (like sitting, moving, or sleeping), cotton also compresses and flattens, which limits its ability to manage ongoing flow.
That’s why some 100% cotton-core pads can lead to:
• moisture sitting closer to the skin
• uneven absorption or pooling
• a higher chance of leaks during movement or overnight
This isn’t because cotton is “bad”—it’s because it’s not designed to do this job on its own.
Wood pulp, on the other hand, behaves differently.
High-quality wood pulp is structured to pull fluid downward and distribute it through the core actively. This creates vertical wicking—moving moisture away from your body quickly and locking it into the pad.
The result?
• faster absorption
• better distribution
• a drier surface feel
• more reliable protection under pressure
This is why many high-performing pads—including joni—use wood pulp at the core. Not as a shortcut, but because it works.
And importantly: not all “natural” materials perform the same way. A pad isn’t just a list of ingredients—it’s a system.
2. What FSC-certified wood pulp means—and why we use it
Our absorbent cores are made with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified wood pulp. This means the material is sourced from responsibly managed forests that protect biodiversity, ecosystems, and the communities connected to them.
But sourcing is only part of the equation.
joni’s wood pulp is engineered to be lightweight and highly absorbent, maintaining its structure even under pressure. That’s what allows our pads to stay ultra-thin without sacrificing performance.
So when you choose a joni pad, you’re choosing materials that are:
• responsibly sourced
• intentionally designed
• built to perform in real life
It’s not just about what it’s made from—it’s about what it does.
3. How joni pads are designed to perform
Performance isn’t one material—it’s how everything works together.
When fluid touches a joni pad, it’s quickly pulled through the top layer and into the absorbent core. From there, the wood pulp helps distribute it evenly, while super absorbent materials lock it in place.
This layered approach helps:
• reduce surface moisture
• prevent pooling
• maintain dryness over time
Cotton-heavy cores, by comparison, can struggle to move fluid once saturated—especially during longer wear or heavier flow.
At joni, every layer has a purpose. The plant-based absorbent core provides structure and movement, while the soft bamboo topsheet supports breathability—helping reduce heat and moisture buildup that can lead to irritation.
The goal is simple: consistent comfort you don’t have to think about.
4. Inside a joni pad: seven layers of protection
Every joni pad is made with seven thoughtfully designed layers—each one chosen to balance comfort, performance, and more responsible materials.

Top Sheet (next-to-skin)
Made from plant-based fibres like non-GMO corn and organic bamboo. This soft, breathable layer absorbs and starts distributing fluid right away—so you feel dry, not damp.
Acquisition Layer (air-laid paper)
Crafted from fluff pulp (wood fibre), this layer quickly pulls fluid away from the surface while maintaining airflow.
Distribution Layer (air-laid paper)
Spreads fluid evenly across the pad to prevent pooling and reduce leaks—using less material, more efficiently.
Absorbent Core (plant-based wood pulp)
Made from FSC-certified wood pulp, this layer locks in moisture within its fibre structure to keep the pad dry and stable.
Super Absorbent Layer (SAP)
We use high-grade SAP from Sumitomo—considered the gold standard in absorbency. It captures liquid and turns it into gel, expanding up to ~300x its weight to help prevent leaks.
Leak-Proof Back Sheet (biofilm)
A breathable, waterproof layer made from a blend of PLA (from renewable corn starch) and PBAT (a biodegradable polymer).
Adhesive + Release Layer
A food-grade adhesive keeps your pad securely in place, with an easy-peel backing.
In short: we combine plant-based materials with proven technology—because you shouldn’t have to choose between sustainability and performance.
5. Why transparency and performance go hand in hand
We’ve intentionally designed joni pads to sit in the sweet spot between sustainability and performance—because we don’t believe you should have to choose between the two.
And when we say performance, we mean more than just “no leaks.” We mean comfort you don’t have to think about. Breathability that supports your body. Materials chosen to reduce the risk of irritation—not add to it.
There’s a lot conflicting claims in period care. Fear-based messaging. Pressure to believe there’s only one “right” choice.
We don’t subscribe to that.
Our commitment is simple: clear, factual information—without fear, without fluff.
We’ll always be transparent about what we use and why. We’ll always be honest about trade-offs (because they exist). And we’ll never tell you not to use another brand.
Because this isn’t about gatekeeping period care—it’s about bodily agency. Your right to understand your options, trust your body, and choose what works best for you.
We’re here to support that choice.
The bottom line: We design with intention—balancing plant-based materials with proven performance—so you get a pad that’s comfortable, effective, and aligned with your values.
At joni, we believe periods deserve better science and transparency—and you deserve a pad that proves both.
Because when you understand what goes into your pad, you can choose what feels right—and that’s what better period care is all about.
